Our facility in Geismar, Louisiana, is a vital part of Methanex’s global supply chain, with an annual production capacity of 4 million tonnes of methanol from our Geismar 1 (G1), Geismar 2 (G2), and Geismar 3 (G3) plants.
The G3 plant is among our most cost-efficient with one of the lowest CO₂ emissions intensity profiles in the industry achieved by utilizing excess hydrogen from the G1 and G2 steam reforming plants and access to abundant and low-cost natural gas.
With the addition of G3 since mid-2024, our three Geismar plants form one of the largest methanol complexes in the world. This expansion strengthens our asset portfolio due to its location, access to abundant natural gas, and lower cost structure—and will further solidify our position as the world’s largest methanol supplier.
We have received International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC) for bio-methanol production at our G1, G2 and G3 sites. This certification enables us to sell to European fuel customers under the Renewable Energy Directive II (RED II), which sets targets for energy from renewable sources, as well as to chemical customers globally to produce low-carbon products like Bio-POM.
Methanex is exploring pathways to gradually decarbonize our existing plants, including opportunities to use renewable electricity to produce green hydrogen and combine this with industrial or biogenic CO₂ from third parties to produce e-methanol. We are exploring the feasibility of e-methanol specifically at our Geismar, U.S. sites.
